First, put a "c" in a circle after the poem or on its title. Now its a copyrighted work. Next post it to your blog, profile, etc. with the "c" in a circle on it. Now you have prove of the first time you published it. You could also write copyrighted (year) 2006? by XYZ on it.

Believe it or not, you now have a valid copyright on the work. It is not a machine, so you don't need a patent, and the government could not possible certify everything that is written, so they made it easy to do yourself.

Now, credit for it cannot be stolen because you have a valid copyright. However, as the record copies are so fond of saying that does not mean it cannot be pirated, but you can always prove the authorship and ownership of it.

There are problems like that even with music, vehicles, basically what ever you make or do. But you shouldn't give up on a dream for fear of some one stealing it. Life is about taking risks and learning from mistakes. You shouldn't crawl up in a shell and do nothing. You should publish the stuff or at least try. No one famous got anywhere by not trying. Life is about loving what you do and fighting to get there. Nothing comes without trials but the key is to work through them.

You have to make sure that whoever publishes them gives you credit for them and has copyright laws, etc - a lot of these publishing things are a total scheme just like the invention places are so just know that you never ever have to pay someone to do this - if they want you - that's it - you don't ever pay them or it is a scheme. but live your dream - just be careful and read up on it - get a book on how to get published like the Writer's Handbook - research so this does not happen!!!

Your not being stupid..... I would recommend talking to a layer first and asking how to go about it. There are lots of them that do copy write and publishing law in the phone book. I would do that before ever trusting an agency.

Write to, or get online with the Library of Congress. They can tell you all about protecting your work. Grab the latest copy of The Writer's Market (I think it's published by Writer's Digest Books in Cincinnati, OH.). I'd love to read some of your stuff, someday. Best of luck to you. Keep writing!

To avoid your work from being copied, it is always advisable to get published, because your work will be copyrighted. But if you cannot afford to publish yourself, there's always fictionpress.com. It's free and you can even get instant reviews - if people are interested in reading it. I often submit my works there, and I have no worries that my work will be plagiarised because everything there is copyrighted to you, and should anyone wants to get their hands on your writings, they need to get your consent first. Link is below.

You have to register first, though. But do not fear, it is free. If you're interested in more though, you can always opt to become a paying member. It's up to you. Happy writing!

Go ahead and do it. It seems that once you publish them, no one elese can claim them. Check with an attourney or with someone who has published things in the past to make sure.

i don't think you are being stupid. it is a risk that every author takes. i would recommend maybe contacting a lawyer first and discuss copyright laws, or even the publisher should know this as well.
