no matter HOW MUCH i hated him getting a red card i'm afraid it was and still is justified. maybe you'll hate me for this but i believe it wasn't marco's fault zidane headbutted him. zidane had a choice: to keep his cool or get all hot-tempered and headbutt marco.

i bet this was all some friggin desperate strategy that italy came up with to make zidane angry. im neutral between the 2 (im for portugal you see but i still like zidane :D) anyways, his headbutt was a violation and MVP or not he's action still deserved a red card. as a referee, you gotta be fair man. and besides marco already got punishment for his insult.

he needed something, but a yellow card was all he deserved. I mean, since when do they use cameras, anyways? They never did, and then, randomly, they do! Was it just because of finals, or just because they were all against france?

And Materazzi shud have gotten something too IN the game not just after. I mena the players are rich enough to pay a few thousand francs. But miss a lot of the finals of a world cup, your LAST game in the national team... i bet zidane wud have payed anything to play!

i wudnt have given him the red card. no way. he probably only watched a little part of the rewind, where zidane did the headbutt, but what about when materazzi insulted zidane? NAH NoT IMPORTANT. seriously!

Yes and no. Yes because you can't just go off and headbutt someone like that in the middle of a game. I've been aplying soccer for 17 years and I know that's a for sure red card. The one thing I didn't like about it was that the Ref didn't see it and I'm not sure if the assisstant did either or if he just saw the replays on the screen. If he saw the replay on the screen then it shouldn't have been because if the ref doesn't see it then it never happened. If I were the ref I would have done exactly what he did and that is consult with the assisstant to see what happened and then make my judgement. You also can't card someone for their mouth if you don't hear what they say, but that's why there's FIFA.

YES! of course it was justified. the answers above me are sickeningly biased. I love zidane and i was rooting for france in the game. I think the headbutt was justifed, i would have done the same thing (well actually, i probably wouldn't have headbutted, but i would have kicked matterazzi's ***) anyway... yes the headbutt was justfied, but of course, so was the red. It DOES NOT MATTER what was said, if you violently attack someone you deserve a red card. As for it not being seen, one of the linesmen latter said that he DID see it live, and informed the head referre.

In conclusion, it WAS justifed that zidane headbutted the italian player. It WAS justifed that he recieved a red card. If i was the referre i would have done the exact same thing. nevertheless it was very sad to see one of the all time greats go out like that.

The red card was fair. Zidane deserved to pay for his actions; however, the italian player deserved the red card also. I think that if I was the referee that I would have done the same thing. I would've seen the italian player on the grass, so I would book ZIdane

no not at all, the referee took a long time before deciding to give out a red card, and he only gave out the red card when all the italians rushed to him. If he had seen it he wouldnt have taken so long to give out the red card which clearly means he did not see it with his own eyes and not on the tv either, he was told what had happened by the italians which is absolutely wrong.
Zidane should have got a red card (only if the ref saw it) because that was physically abusing, but if what the italian said was racist then that is worse, Italy could have been stripped of their title if it was proven that what he said was racist, because racism is the most illegal thing in FIFA. Oh well, its over now. But if you think about it, France won, I mean every one knows Italy cheated...so smile and stop crying about it because France are gonna crush Italy in 2008, oh yehhh they willlll!!!!!

Absolutley NOT justified.
The red card should not have been given.
FIFA have stated that NO video evidence be used during the game. But the referee and linesman alll missed it. It wasn't until it was brought to the attention of the officials that a red card was given. So the rules were not followed. Irrespective of whether the incident itself deserved a red card, the rules as they are simply don't allow it.

i think that zidane did the right thing and it is very unfair of the refree .If i was the refree i would not believe the sideline refree because you should not believe anyone blindly because one wrong decision could make a country loose so i would ask Zidane andMatrezzi and if nonoe answer me i would make the match coutinue

of course it was justified!!! anyone who knows anything about soccer knows that EVERYONE is always trash talking. the first answer is stupid because a real man wouldn't have given away his country's best chance at the world cup. zidane was talking the whole time and i guarantee it wasn't all g-rated. he needs to understand that there is a time and a place for everything, and the 110th minute of the world cup final is NOT the time or place to lose your temper like that, regardless of what materazzi said.
