Yes, it's painful. It's not called "labor" for nothing! You're essentially pushing something the size of a watermelon through something the size of a coffee cup. Thank God for the elasticity of the human body!

My mom had all three of us kids without pain killer and never felt like screaming or anything. But we were all kind of small 7lbs or so. My sister had her 9 lb baby without pain killers. She said it was uncomfortable and that there was a lot of pressure but that it wasn't bad. She was more sore after the baby was out than during the actual delivery. Our family as a tendency toward having strange reactions to pain killers and medical drugs in general, so I plan to go without pain killers as well whenever I get pregnant. There are breathing techniques like Hypnobirthing and Bradley breathing that are supposed to help you work with your body instead of being so afraid of the pain. My mom used Bradley method and my sister and some of my friends have used Hypnobirthing - it sounds more out there than it is - it is really more about relaxing.

Ummm, Kirsty Alley said it best when she said: "You try pushing something the size of a watermelon through an opening of the size of a lemon and see how hot you look!"

that is different for every woman. it obviously hurts really bad, but thanks to hormones, we get thru it and eventually forget the reality of the pain. if it hurt too bad, no one would have more than one kid. some women have really easy labors, some dont. mine was 38 hours with an extreme episiotomy, my epidural wore off before i had her, but im still glad i had it

epidurals are awesome....if you have that, its not so much the birth that hurts, just the next few days and weeks that are a bit strange and uncomfortable. Just try to take it easy, and don't try to be "tough." There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of modern medicine!
