I have a male guppy that had its tail nipped to shreds by other fishes. Now he swims vertically: head down, tail up. How do I care for him? Will his tail grow back? Will he survive? How do I help him survive?

Fins grow back, scales do not.
You may want to separate him, from the fish that bite him.
You could put him in a breeders box, put "metafix" in the water.

He might make it, same thing happened to mine, he's better now.
His tail still looks a little funny, but at least it's functional again.

Have a bunch of Orandas with lovely fan tails, all in a koi pond with koi. Two of the Orandas` tails got sucked into the pump and lost their tails. Both fish swam head down. I fixed the problem with the pump and removed the injured fishes to a tank inside the house. One recovered completely, the other has a tail of some sorts.

To answer your question, your fish has a chance to survive, you must give it the best chance to survive by removing it from the current tank. Feed it as normal, it will get to the food and don't worry about it any further. If all goes well you will watch the tail grow back - very slowly.
Good luck

Isolate your male guppy first. Its nipped tail might grow back if you allow it to survive in a calm and spacious atmosphere so that it can swim and explore better. Feed the fish regularly and give it a healthy diet. Guppy's tail will definitely grow in short span of time.

Relocate the damaged guppy to a hospital tank. Then treat with Melafix. Providing tail damage was the only injury this fish sustained, and provided it is still capable of eating, it could possibly recover in a month. To a degree, fish have remarkable regenerative capabilities, and Melafix works wonders on wounds.

If the guppy can't eat or sustained additional damage to its body or has becoming infected, then the outlook is probably grim.

Depends on the extent of the damage, the tail may grown back in time or the fish will adjust to the missing tail. You may want to reduce the turbulence in the water to help the guppy.

Some people buy little weight-type things for their fish and have them put on, to balance the fish's swimming.

I'm not sure where you could buy one of these, but it wouldn't hurt to look!

Other than that, is he eating okay? Can he make his way around the tank?
