Never. That's just what it's tested at-in a perfect condidtions lab. It will rarely hit 53. And they say that a 56K modem is the fastest and a faster one is not feasible...

Im on 56K and Im at the high end of that spectrum, sometimes when Im downloading something, for a few minutes at the most it will download much faster than that but before too long it will come back down. I dont think its possible with 56k modem to maintain a higher speed. I would switch to a faster connection but the only one available is through direct tv and its way too expensive.

56k will never be how fast you'll ever connect/download some thing. It'll usually not be any higher than 35Kb/s. 56k is just how high it has tested to go, and no higher.

not that i know off...it may vary by ISP.
but why are u still using 56k modem. get broadband. its mad cheap

looking from a hardware view...it cannot infact it may go below that because of the line conditions.... however new compression methods applied to the data transferred can make it possible to have more data transfered compared to how it would be when transferred without compression.
