In order to become a professor you must first earn a PhD in your area of specialization.

During your PhD studies, your university may offer a program called "Future Professoriate" or something similar, which helps you to prepare yourself in terms of pedagogical skills and to learn exactly what will be required of you as a professor (consistent published research output, administrative duties, committee work, etc.). While you are a PhD student, you should also present papers about your research at national conferences, and network with other scholars in your field.

After you complete your PhD, you can then apply for jobs nationwide.
