Are you in the USA? If so, the marking is likely that of sterling silver. Sterling is made of 92 1/2 percent pure silver and 7 1/2 percent copper. The copper makes it strong enough for jewelry. The 925 shows the same thing as the percent, that the ring meets the national standard for sterling. The mark "sterling" means the same thing as 925. The 925 mark is recognized in many countries. Many European countries use numbers instead of "sterling" or instead on "kt" or karat marks on gold.

825 is not a mark recognized in legal metal stamping in this country. Look closely and see if it might be 925.

If the ring is not a silver color, let me know and we can go from there. Siver will often show a slight tarnish or darkening in recessed areas. That is also a clue.
