Are there REALLY a lot of mosquitoes during the summer in Alaska?

I will have a trip to Alaska in late August. What kind of gears will you recommend to prevent from mosquitoes bites?

Well, I heard they are actually mistaken for small birds.....

You might check out Alaska travel websites to get some ideas of conditions .. seems that in august things shouldn't be quite so bad, in most places that is the case.
However, I really don't know.
