bums became bums when the depression that ruled there lives took complete control and they lost the drive to excel and have more in this world.......they do not have the motivation or aspirations to become anything......some would argue that they are the richest people on earth for not needing anything but what is given to them.....me personally i think they need some motivational therapy.

Some Bums Became What They Are Right Now.
Because Of Technology,
They Become Obsolete, So To Speak.

Others Are Involve In A Chemical Job:
They Didn't Quit
But Their Body Does.

Some Are Born Natural Bums.

Maybe they had a child get murdered and want to slowly die with a bottle on the streets. Maybe somebody got injured on the job with no insurance and can't afford rent anymore. Maybe some are addicts and they stay hidden in the shadows so nobody cares. Maybe some people like living on a sidewalk that smells like urine. Maybe they are seriously schizophrenic and have no money or understanding of medication. Maybe they are back from a war and can't live a normal live because they can't stop dreaming of death.

There are a lot of possible reasons somebody becomes a bum. Everybody is just one step away from the gutter. If there are friends or family willing to reach out and help, there can be great hope. Otherwise, the odds aren't good.

There are a lot of different factors at play here...most of the ones who do not suffer from any sort of mental illness are either addicts or lazy...my husband and I have picked up many hobos and vagrants...we've got them in touch with our pastor who in turn, found living and work arrangements for them...but they are really not interested...not one of them; however, they are appreciative of the free meal and the company and ride.

Bums usually have messed up lives before they became bums and it's sad really...but there is nothing one can do if they don't want the help.

If you see a bum hanging out at McD's or something...invite him to come have lunch with you...talk to him...slip him a $5 or something...sure-he may spend on booze or smokes but it doesn't mean the gesture shouldn't be made. Then you will have a better idea about the bum's plight.

Each person has their own story, sometimes it is bad breaks, or mental health problems. Many of them are educated but have a hard time with the getting and keeping a job. I think mental health is one of the main reasons and staying on their medication is hard, when you don't have a job. I think that there is hope but it will take money, many other countries don't have the same problems that we have with bums because of our social service issues.
Also not all bums are bums, I've heard about lawyers who get off of work and then grub themselves up to go pan handle from tourists and get just as much doing that as their regular job. I've also heard about people who go from their homes to beg for money to buy drugs.

There are various reason bums become bums. Addiction to alcohol, drugs and gambling are just some of them. Divorce and losing jobs and money in the stock could be another reasons.

There are hope, but depend on the person if they want to be helped. In the case they got addiction or mental disorder, they have to be put into rehabilitation first I think. They need to be cured from their addiction or mental disorder.

If the reason is just financial and broken relationship that sent them into bankrupcy, I think this type can be helped by giving them financial aid and train to get a job.

well, a true bum (in my opinion) is someone who CAN help themselves and choose not to...they bum things they really don't need...cigarettes, rides to places they don't need to go, sometimes money (coz they blew theirs)
i don't think there is any hope for them until people stop handing things over to those that can help themselves
but, if you are talking about homeless people...they don't really bum...they survive...they are on the streets for different reasons...some have had a good job and the company folded, leaving them to sell everything they had to pay off all the credit they got when things were going good for them...others were misplaced and never had a good start to begin with, for one reason or the other

Oh man, how weird. I went to one of the most popular places for bums to habitat ... San Francisco. I was just passing through and was there for about 1-2 hours ... I saw like 35 bum guys. And I talked to one bum guy in front of a pizza place asking for money and giving out newspapers. He was a really nice, friendly, funny guy ... such a shame for one of the few nice people in San Francisco to be living on the street.

most of the bums here in our town are that way because of alcohol. It consumes their lives, and they end up loosing everything over it, wives, children, and all hopes. Most of them had jobs, but lost those too. I know of one guy that was offered a job cleaning out a fence row from weeds for 10$ an hour, plus free meals, and a ride to and from work and he came and worked for one day and then wanted payed for that day, and never came back. There is only hope for them if they want it, and most of them don't want help.
