Herpes simplex (not "complex"!) type 1 is a virus that usually affects the lips and mouth. Herpes simplex type 2 is a virus that usually affects the genitals.

Either virus can affect the other area, and in fact it is more common for it to do so, nowadays. Thus, the only way to tell the two apart is through lab testing. Less commonly, herpes virus can affect anywhere else on the skin. When it affects the fingers, for instance, it is called "herpetic whitlow".

The virus is most contagious during active outbreaks - red, clustered, painful blisters, usually with clear to yellowish fluid. Shedding of virus from sites of previous or future outbreaks during a time when the skin appears normal has also been documented. Transmission is not 100%. In other words, you may or may not have picked up the virus during your recent bj. A large percentage of the population reportedly has herpes, because of the above uncertainties.

Herpes viruses are not curable. They cause an acute outbreak, then migrate up along nerves, to live forever near the spinal cord. With stress, sunlight, trauma, etc., the virus can reactivate and resurface on the skin.

The best ways to avoid catching herpes are (1) abstaining from sexual activity (difficult and inconvenient); and (2) using barrier contraception, such as condoms.

Yes, you CAN get herpes on your genitals from oral sex with a person with an active outbreak.

They are different strains of herpes, but both can infect genitalia. However, the strain that normally infects the oral area doesn't normally cause repeat outbreaks like the genital strain does.

Oral sex should be safe as long as she does not have an active outbreak.

She CAN give you her cold sore to your penis if she gives you a bj.

She CAN transfer the cold sore to other parts of your body. They are highly contagious, especially if they're weeping.

If she does not currently have a cold sore there's a rare chance you can get it. It's mostly contagious when present.

Wear a condom if her cold sore is present. Or you could wait till her cold sore is gone. In the mean time, she could give you hand jobs, and you could go down on her, with a vaginal condom of course.

Not to mention other, deeper sex. Have you asked her to lick you nipples and kiss around your neck?

Also, there will be less worry about her fellatio to you if you busy yourselves with your penetrating her from behind. Remember, spermicide increases effectiveness of the condom while lubricating! Have fun!
