i can sign on on a different computer but not my own. I was told that yahoo is experiencing problems everywhere.

It's probably your firewall. Before you go through the whole uninstall/reinstall process, try this simple step first.

Disable your firewall. If that fixes your problem then you're going to have to work on your firewall settings if you want to have it running at the same time as your messenger software.
