The people who insult anime suffer from the exact same fallacy as those who adore it. Anime is a medium, and as such, anime covers a huge range of programming. Saying either "all anime sucks" or "all anime is cool" is like saying "all TV shows (whether they're sitcoms or news or drama or action or Sci-Fi) suck" or "all TV shows are cool". Some anime will be good, and some will be utter crap.

So, the reason people insult or praise anime is because they haven't seen any of the other category. This is to be expected because a lot of people tend to avoid anime based on a limited sample of very bad or badly translated programs they saw a very long time ago. As anime becomes more profitable and more popular, and as newer generations without exposure to the bad dubs from a long time ago start taking over, people will start to realize that anime encompasses a huge range of material of different levels of quality. At that time, they will insult particular anime shows they don't like without having to insult the whole medium.

Most people who answered this question don't really watch anime. And for them, animation is just supposed to entertain you for 30 minutes. Probably, they also rather play a shooting game rather than a role playing game.Or watch Schwarznegger in action, rather than Robin Williams acting.

Also, American pride is huge in some people (not everyone, of course^^).You can't criticize Mickey without being considered anti-animal rights.

Ive grown up with american cartoons and anime, and this is what i think:
Anime has better quality in terms of graphics and animation
Anime's soundtrack is way superior and attempts to involve the viewer in the atmosphere of each moment
Faces in anime attempt to express feelings and emotions, and you will find yourself having the ame expressions during the scenes.
Plots are way much deeper and there is a huge character development, the story is intense and extremely elaborated.
You feel much more involved, which for some people, it's far from what they want

In Cartoons, animations are clumsy. The ones who speak of the big eyes as a criticism forget the incredibly exagerated facial expressions and even 4 fingers (or 6) in Cartoons.but thats ok.
Character development is extremely weak, they usually are as deep as Clark Kent.
Soundtracks are basic and repetitive.
The stories are made to entertain, and not to involve the viewer.

Simply putting it, cartoons are much more directed for children, or for adult temporary (30 minute) weekly amusement.
Anime is directed towards all ages, and the show does not end when the episode is over. You will keep thinking of what will happen next, and even review some of the dilemmas presented in yourself.

For me, the best Cartoon ever was Dungeons and Dragons. Suspended due to...acts of violence.typically..american.

I have nothing against the Japanese, I just think that their animations and story lines sucks. The stories are not real enough. They do not grab me. Now American Comics, seeing the way that the characters are drawn and reading their stories. I can relate to them. I can feel where they are coming from. When I read American comics, I get it. I do not feel that way with Anime. In the American comics, there are real human beings with hardcore problems underneath those suits. When Superman is out of his costume, he is Clark Kent and he is in love with Lois Lane. When Spider-Man is not swinging around NYC, he is Peter Parker, the Daily Bugle Photographer and Student. When the superheroes are not superheroes they are people with families, friends, and love interest. They do not yell at each other for an hour and do nothing but fight. They have feelings and are there for others. Take Professor X and Magneto for example, when they are not fighting each other, they are playing chess or talking philosophically to one another. They are real men and friends who happen to have problems and are both friends and enemies because of it. There is no good or evil, just a normal complicated relationships. When I read American Comics, I get their problems because even though I do not wear the suit of a hero or a villain, I am a human with feelings. I am a person. Anime characters have no human feelings or emotions, they act like robots. They all look the same and they all seem to almost act the same. They do not feel like people. I watch a whole JLU marathon the other day, and I saw Green Lantern (John Stewart) and Hawkgirl (Shi'era) having a real relationship, with arguing and pickering, and then saying "I love you" and kissing each other at the end. I cry when I see that because it is so beautiful, I do not feel that way with Anime characters, ever.

As a cartoonist myself, I see how hard folks work to put out any type of animated production. The Japanese are not an issue, probably not with anyone. "The Simpsons" is animated in Korea, and it's the longest running sitcom of all time.

This is only my personal opinion, so please don't take offense. You either like anime or you don't. Anime just seems really pointless. There's no real plot or point or gag or punchline or payoff. It all seems pretty much the same, and empty and devoid of any real creativity. It's formulaic, derivative, and uninspired, it starts nowhere and ends nowhere. It's not really very satisfying and it doesn't hold my interest long enough for me to care where it's going or how it's going to end. It just seems like a really lame total waste of time to me.

I'm also not impressed by huge eyes and spiky hair and I don't know anyone who exclaims and says, "Hah!" or "Hah?" at the end of every sentence. Is that supposed to be how all Caucasians look and act? At any rate, anime grates on my nerves very quickly.

As a whole, I don't feel like I insult anime. I feel like it insults me, as a cartoonist and as a potential viewer. There's really nothing there to see.

But apparently there's an audience for it. I've just never been able to understand why. It's a total jerk-off.

Personally, I think it's silly.

I mean, I've seen entire episodes of Dragonball Z with characters just standing there, analyzing each other, then screaming for five minutes before they actually do something. And that kind of thing happens to find it's way into other shows. It gets kinda dull and repetitve after a while.

It really has nothing to do with the fact that it's Japanese.

i think that people insult anime, not because of the show(altho some are worthy or insult)-but because of the fans. not to say that all anime fans are ignorant mindless drones, but a good many of them are. i could not begin to count the number of spaz kids i've seen that "love" every single new anime show.

i do not think that all anime are bad, but to belive that all are inherently great is just ignorant. its this attitude that is really causes people to start to hate the genre. i love comic books but i do not love all comic books. for me to say that i love a title just because it is a comic book would be equally unintelligent.

now i have been a anime fan longer than most of you have been alive(assuming that most of you are teenagers) and will countinue to be a fan. but i will not say something is good just because it is held in the realms of a popular genre. for this reason alone i think that some anime and some of everyother thing in our fickle pop-culture desirve insult and should receive the proper verbal abuse.

Why do they insult it? If they don't like it then they should stay away from it. Anime's have deeper story lines and characters. If they "know" it sucks they must have watched quite a bit of it.

Critics of anime (mostly) have nothing against the Japanese, they simply do not like the style of "Japanimation". I don't like anime either. I think the shows are corny, lame and crude.
