The Alaska quake of 1964 was 9.2, the New Madrid quake is impossible to measure due to the lack of seismic technology in the early 19th century.
The tri-state tornado of 1925 claimed the most lives in the United States, in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.
If you re-word your question to "Contiguous United States", then Missouri would fit the bill.
