you need to look at the smoke,,and see what color it is,,it could just be a little oil,,or a rich gas mixture, if you have had to add any oil to it,,it may be pulling a little through the PVC valve,,and burning it,,i own a repair shop,,and see a lot of cars with just bad PVC valve,s,,and other mechanics tell them they need an engine over haul,,it seems these days everyone wants the money,,if you have had to add any oil,,this might be a sign that the PVC is going bad,,you said the car was running OK,,so i am guessing that you have no other problems with it,,you also mentioned a exhaust problem..or pollution control system,,there are things on the system that will cause one to emit some smoke,,from the engine,,such as the egr valve,,PVC valve,,anti by pass valve for the smog pump,,and so on,,you can check it out real good,,and if you see a bad hose ,,just replace it,,and see if that helps,,i am pretty sure you will find it,,by looking it over real good,,i hope i have helped some.

It must be an Aussie car. They haven't made a Falcon in the states since 1970. If it's an automatic transmission it could be the modulator valve . If the valve leaks transmission fluid will be sucked into the engine and cause smoking. It's a small can attached to the back or sometimes the side of the trans with a hose attached. If you pull off the hose and see transmission fluid that's your problem.

There are a few things to claim here. First off is why do you, who is aware of nothing about automobiles wish to motel a criticism because the mechanic told you your automobile was as just right as new? It wasn't the mechanic that ran the auto low on oil. And the oil thing, it is bought nothing to do with what's flawed together with your car, you just wanted anybody to say it was once the unsuitable oil after which you possibly can resort a criticism about the man who encouraged the oil. After which we come to the surprising discontinue that result in this, A surprising discontinue won't make the compression go away, could knock the wire off the coil though. And also you fell for it and had the vehicle towed, now they have an extra story, no pressure and they have your vehicle. See what with a purpose to fee you simply to get it out of there. You would wish to start the criticism now, take a faucet recorder with you so that you get the story straight.

the usual cause for smoke is either valve stem seals ,guides or rings.it is possible that oil is being sucked through the intake through the pcv system.(positive crankcase ventilation).the hoses need to be in good shape as well as a clean and working pcv valve.make sure there is vacuum on the hose that leads to the pcv,if not it needs to be opened up.the pollution system adds air to the exhaust to help it burn cleaner.

No. An '84 probably has a dead catalytic converter and a tired motor. You'll probably have to change out the cat, but if you do, check the motor too. Compression test for sure. You might well need your rings and valves rebuilt. If you don't love your car, you might want to trade it in.

The pvc system has to be sealed. It will creat a vacuum leak which will result in a "miss". The miss is caused of incomplete combustion in the cylinder the vacuum leak is related to.

Smoke is from either oil leaking into the cylinders or too much fuel.

If the smoke is black, it's a rich gas mixture, if it's blue, it's oil, if it's white, it's coolant.
