Extra Detail the y is covered by a heat shield that cant be removed. And I have the correct socket and wrenchs Im wondering if you have to drop the exhaust somehow or something. have all the tools but this has me stumped.

drop the pipe use plenty of p b blaster on some of these the sensor was so galled into the pipe that it ruined the threads as the sensor came out[it is a18mm by 150 thread] same as old ford [large style] spark plug. and yes there is a upstream of converter and a downstream of converter sensor on your car.when you re install make sure that there is a little anti size compound on the threads of the new sensor.

You need to rent or purchase a socket designed to remove an O2 sensor at an auto parts store or tool supply. Make sure that this part is bad before replacing it. Just because the computer gives a reading doesn't mean that the part is bad. It means that the engine may be running lean or rich. The sensor will need to be tested by a competent mechanic. I can't answer whether or not there's one or two sensors on your BMW. But you should check where the pipes leave the manifold and into the catalytic converter. If the engine is a four cylinder, then you should only have one, if it is a six, then you might have two. 1996 and newer cars can have two or four depending on the engine type; but a 1991 should only have one to worry about. Hope this helps.

you will need to use a box end wrench on it some of thesecars had 2 sensors and some had one if it has 2 there will be one on each side of the car just where the exhaust curves down under the car if it has one it will be at the y under the car so you only have one and they put it in a bad spot but the wrench will work for you

Well, find out what size the socket is...Generally 22mm. wrench works for most O2's. Would have better clearance than that socket. Also most 1996 and newer cars are going to ahve 2 or more sensors. OBDII has that setup.

whats with BMW tonight
use a wrench BMW's are notorious for having a special tool for it so, low and behold there is prob a 500dollar tool that will make life easy, but a wrench should work (and a lil elbow greese), if it has 2 o2 sensors then one should be on each side b4 it crosses into the y pipe

Go to www.pelicanparts.com and they can tell you everything you need to know.
I own a 96 3 series and get a huge amount of useful information from these guys.
They know BMWs and Porsches REAL well.
They have a technical questions section that will likely tell you exactly what you need and how to do it.
They showed me how remove my driver's seat, and how to reset my service interval lights for FREE!
Good luck!
Oh, btw, you have two 02 sensors, one forward of the cat,
and the one you found, behind the cat.
