are you an experianced rider? its not a good idea to ride w/ out a guide if you don't have any experiance.and i mean more than just a few trail rides experiance. anything could happen. if your afraid a guide will only let you ride in a tight line and only walk then try some different stables. some places are like that and some place will let you canter along side some1. if no luck take lessons at a stable and then lease a horse when you are ready. you will be able to ride in a ring w/ out an instructor and if the stable has trails possibly trail riding w/ out an instructor. but i highly doubt you will find a stable that will let you go riding w/ out an insructor unless you are a leasing student. this could mean lots of danger to the horses and riders. have you ever seen Black Beauty? he gets sent to a stable where any1 can just come and lease him for a day and he gets abused. good luck!:)

It depends on where you live. In Michigan there are several places to ride. They will let you go out alone after you take your first ride with a guide. They will show you the area and rate your skill as a rider. Naturally, if you are not a good rider, you won't be going out alone, but if you have some skill, that won't be a problem.
If there are stables in your area, call them and ask what their policy is. Let them know that you want to ride alone, and you are willing to comply with whatever qualifications/requests they might make.

If you are looking for a stables to lease you a horse for a day to go venture on your own. Then you will have a hard time finding one. Insurrence doesn't cover it.
I live in California and it is rare to even find a place here who allows it. Not sure if you are a begin rider or an experienced rider. However, they don't like to take the risk unless they have instructor there.

Buy your own horse. Horse stables take on a lot of liability when someone goes out on their own. everyone's too sue happy anymore. You can ride the pony at walmart for a low price, and the greeter doesn't bother you there unless you try to steal the reins. Can I have ten points?
