My mom and I need to get a cell phone, but we don't know which is one is the best. We don't need a lot of minutes, but just need one just in case.

I forgot to say that I'l be a freshman in college from September. I don't know if that will make a difference, but just in case!

Take a look at family share plans (2 phones share an allotment of minutes). Sprint/ Nextel also offer plans with unlimited free incoming calls, which could be nice if your friends/ family are always calling you. Also take a look at if your carrier offers free in-network calling. Verizon has free in-network calling. Since most of my family & friends have Verizon none of us ever use billable minutes calling each other. Make sure you take a good look at the coverage maps (not all networks available in all areas).

Well, sounds like you don't need a plan for 2 at all. The cheapest 2 plan I have seen is T-Mobile for $60.

I ditched the monthly plans entirely and went with T-Mobile pay-as-you-go, or "prepaid". After the cost of the phone, you can buy $100 worth of minutes (1000) that are good for a year. That's about $9 a month.

Buying in smaller amounts may cost you 15 cents a minute though.

Cingular is great. Their family plan is what I have. $59 a month for two lines. And you share 550 minutes between the two of you. But you call each other for free.

And some of their phones are free if you get a two year contract.

They have amazing service too.

It would be perfect for being at college.

The cheapest "plan" is to have no phone at all. Saves a lot!
