For years now, I keep hearing radio spots that have female announcers that roughen-up their voices when they talk. I just feel like clearing my throat when I hear that... anyone else notice?

It's because higher voices drop after so much use... If a woman tries to maintain her high pitch, the vocal cords get strained. Listen to a Marine Drill Instructor, for a better example. Or, the speaking voices of singers like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Sopranos on stage, tenors after hours...

I think it depends what station you're listening to, and what kind of music they offer. If it's a hard rock or alternative station, I think they think it sounds "tough" and "Edgy." On the country and easy listening stations, the ladies have normal voices. In general, women in radio have deeper voices, no one wants to hear some high-pitched, whiney voice on the radio, they like 'em deep n' sexy.

Most of them have alto voices . They dont mean to be raspy and FYI most of them arent raspy . Just the ones that are real popular morning hosts that have been on forever.
