Children do not NEED cellphones. There may be a few rare occasions when they might come in handy [they do tell the time]. At 12, children should not have so much freedom that they actually NEED a cellphone. If they are at a friends house, there is a phone. At school? There are phones. At the mall, the pool, or a movie? Preplan when and where to pick them up. If you think your child must have one, make it frill-free and prepaid. They are simply not necessary.

It is completely different for different kids and a decision their parents have to make.

First, why is the cell phone needed? If this is really just for fun, then the kid doesn't need it and if he or she is wanting one for fun then more maturity is probably needed before getting one.

Also, if there is no real need, who will pay for the phone and monthly charges? That's an issue that can also be influenced by the wealth of the family.

My daughter who is about to turn 11 recently got a cell phone, but it was mostly due to the fact that it was cheaper for us to drop the landline where we live (we get excellent cell coverage) and add a cell line for her. She doesn't NEED one in that a landline would have sufficed for her uses (it's not like she's driving around town by herself, is it?). However, it made financial sense for our family for everyone to have their own phone and discontinue the landline entirely.

It depends, if you live in the city, it's a great idea. But if your on a budget, you should get a pay-as-you-go phone to prevent overages. Many cell phone companies ( Verizon, Sprint, Cingular, etc.) offer another line for just $9.99 per month. If you have a young child, you can get a Verizon Migo or a firefly mobile phone. You can program numbers in (mom, dad, brother, sister, and Emergency).

Yes, but I think as some other people do the phone should have restrictions. Not just for friends it should be for emergencies and to get in contact with the nescessary people. In most cases you would have to really moniter the use of it. So it really does depend on the parents and the kids. Hope this helps

no, they should just a cell phone for in cases of emergencies, to call mom & dad and ER services, and not to call friends, play games, get ringtones, etc. Pay as you go phones are perfect for teenagers, you get more control over their minutes. On top of it we don't fully know the health effects of cell phones on children's development.

yes. You can teach them to use them in case of emergencies. It can also be used to teach them how to communicate responsibly and effectively. However, the phone should have restricted number access. The ringtones can be used as rewards for good behavior.
