go to you local parts house like carquest or kragen. Ask for a product called "guraranteed to pass" or double you money back. If your rig is not that far out it will drop the Hc readings considerably. If you have engine problems it will not help but if it is just a little tired and the carburetion is a little rich it will help. I have only known one person that it didn't work with and they basically tried it in a gross polluter. I had a 67 Ranchero with a 302, it dropped the hydrocarbons over 400 points and it passed on the second try. If all your components are there and you are pretty close on the emissions output you don't have anything to lose, I would give it a shot. If you can't find this stuff just do as you were already advised and run the tank low and add octane booster or maybe a bottle of isopropyl alcohol.

I'm not a mechanic, but my husband is and he is also a licensed smog technician in the state of California. Here is his advice: Depending on your financial situation, you may be able to qualify for what is known as the CAP (consumer assistance program) program. You can obtain information regarding this program at a Gold Shield Station, or you can contact the Bureau of Automotive Repair and request a booklet regarding the CAP program. The CAP program will pay up to $500 for your repairs if you qualify for this program. Or if you prefer to get rid on your '86 Land Cruiser, the state of California has a program where they will give you $1,000 for your vehicle. You can get information on this option at the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Don't waste your money on fuel additives, as I know from experience, 85% of the time they do not work. Hope this helps. Good luck with your vehicle.

The best way is to get a fresh tune up, run a tank of high octane fuel thru it, then prior to going to the test station, go for a long *** drive, get the enging really really hot, this should help you pass the test, if it will still not pass smog, and you dont want to get rid of it and the repairs are way to much, you can go out of state and get a PO Box and register it out of state that way, first try the hot engine first. Good Luck

take it in when your car is low on gas,,just before you get there,,add a can of octane booster,,it burns very clean (fill your tank as soon as you're done or you could blow your rings)
