ok...you have to change the fraction as follows (so that all bottom numbers divide)
5 1/2..............5 4/8
23 7/8...........23 7/8
5 3/4..............5 6/8
2 1/4..............2 2/8
Add the whole numbers...35
Add fractions..................19/8 which 8 goes into 19 2times so add 2 to the whole numbers...giving you 37 plus the remmaining fraction would be 6/8...reduced this would be 3/4...the answer should be 37 3/4 or 37.75

you have to reduce each of the fractions. lets start with the first fraction...
5 1/2 = {(5x2) +1}/2
what all that mumbo jumbo above means is that first you multiply 5 times 2 which will be 10 (you know that right...) you add 1 to the 10 and then that is 11 so 5 1/2 reduced is 11/2 ......
lets do the second fraction
23 7/8 {(23 x8) +7}/8
Again, multiply 23 times 8 which is 184 (3 times 8 is 24 carry the 2 on the 2 and 8 times 2 plus 2 is 18...so 184). so 184 plus 7 is 191. So that comes out to 191/8......
5 3/4
5 times 4 is 20 plus 3 is 23. so that is 23/4
2 1/4
2 times 4 is 8 plus 1 is 9. so that is 9/4
so what you really have here is:
11/2 +191/8 + 23/4 + 9/4
NOW WHAT you have to do next is that you have to give all the fractions COMMON DENOMINATORS! yOUR PROBLEM IS GREAT FOR THIS CAUSE THEY ALL DIVIDE INTO EACHOTHER.
Lets put 8 as the common denominator.
11/2 = x/8 so 8 divided by 2 is 4....right? so you multiply 4 times 11 and that is 44... so you turn this fraction into 44/8
The second problem already has an 8 as a denominator so don't do anything with that one for now.
3rd fraction
23/4 = x/8 So 8 divided by 4 is 2 so 2 times 23 is 46 so you have 46 over 8 = 46/8 !
4th fraction (we are almost done here thank GOD)
9/4 = x/8 so 8 divided by 4 is 2 so 2 times 9 is 18 so that is 18/8
SO FINALLY YOU HAVE THESE FRACTIONS TO ADD:
44/8 + 191/8 + 46/8 + 18/8
SO NOW YOU JUST ADD THE NUMERATORS (numbers on top)
44+ 191 + 46 + 18 = 299/8
And if you divide 299 by 8 you'll get 37 3/8....
I know that it sounds really complicated but it is not, once you get the hang of it. Math is all about practice practice practice... Good Luck ;)

First separate the whole and fractional parts
(5 + 23 + 5 + 2) + (1/2 + 7/8 +3/4 + 1/4) = 37 3/8
Next find a common denominator for the fraction (8)
We'll go ahead and add the whole numbers in this step
as well
35 + (4/8 + 7/8 + 6/8 +2/8)
Now add the fraction together
35 + 19/8
reduce the fraction to a mixed number (19/8 = 2 3/8) and add it
to the whole number
35 + 2 3/8 = 37 3/8

Covert all of the fractions to the common denominator 8: i.e 1/2 = 4/8 and so on........
5 4/8 + 23 7/8 + 5 6/8 + 2 2/8 = 35 19/8 or 37 3/8

you have to find a common denominator for all of them which is 8.
so
5 4/8+ 23 7/8+ 5 6/8+ 2 2/8= 37 2/8 just add of all the fractions and then the whole numbers
when you add just the fractions you get 19/8 which ends up being 2 3/8 so you add that to all the whole numbers which is 37 3/8

Rememeber when adding fractions, you need to make a common denominator.
Let's start by converting the whole number into fractions
5 1/2 = 11/2
23 7/8 = 191/8
5 3/4 = 23/4
2 1/4 = 9/4
37 3/8= 299/8
Let's make the common denominator 8
so 11/2 = 44/8
23/4= 46/8
9/4= 18/8
so 44/8 + 191/8 + 46/8 +18/8= 299/8
Now to convert it:
37 3/8 = 299/8

u must bring them all to the root form. 1/2 = 4/8 right? 1/4 = 2/8 so you would come up with 5 4/8+ 23 7/8 + 2 2/8 + 37 3/8=?
5 4/8
23 7/8
2 2/8
+37 3/8
_______
69 0/8 or 69 even

ok you need to find a commen denominator in this problem it is 8 so youre problem turns into.
5 4/8+23 7/8+5 6/8+2 2/8=35 19/8
now you take 8 and devide it into 19 and you get 2 and a remainder of 3 so you add the 2 onto the 35 to get 37 3/8

You take the fraction and find a common denominator. 5 1/2 becomes 5 4/8
23 7/8 stays the same, Once you get the common denominator you add them all together. That is the correct answer to the problem.

uh.. the LCD here is 8.
so.. you transform [ehehe, forget the term, its been so long since I've went to school. 5 months! NO! i'm not a dropout.. but that isnt the topic.. so.. let's move on..]
5 1/2 becomes.. 11/2 make it the same to the LCD.. 44/8
23 7/8 becomes 191/8
5 3/4 becomes 23/4, change it again it becomes 46/8
2 1/4 becomes 9/4, then it becomes 18/8.
it totals to 299/8. divide 299 by 8 and there you get the answer. hope you got it. for further questions, you may im me or message me. :)
