Breakthrough bleeding can occur for many reasons. If you take a low dose birth control pill and take your pill too late in the day, you can have breakthrough bleeding. Many women on the depo shot have it. I have never mistaken it from my period though. It is usually light and lasts only a few hours for me.

Breakthrough bleeding is spotting. They call it breakthrough bleeding because it occurs in between your period.
