My boyfriend is sweet and sensitive and an all around wonderful guy. But, when he has mood swings, it can be a real nightmare. He will get really angry, frustrated and shut off. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can deal with this?

I am 17, and Ihave been dealing with bipolar all my life (along with ADD, ADHD, SADD, and ODD). I would suggest you have him take meds.
Here is a list of meds I have taken to help control my bipolar disorder

*Tegretol ( generic name : carbamazepine)
Side Effects : http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/teg1430.htm
*Depakote ( generic name: divalproex sodium)
Side Effects: http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/dep1125.htm
* Eskalith ( generic name: lithium carbonate)
Side Effects: http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/esk1231.htm

Also, get him into counsling/therapy.

You need to understand that a disorder like bipolar is very hard to control. You can't imagine how hard it is to live with it. All the outbursts and mood swings, and you can't even control them. And when you try you just get more frustrated and your mood swings get worse...Imagine having bipolar, plus ADD and ADHD (basically meaning you can't concentrate and/or sit still), plus ODD (basically meaning that you cant take directions from authorities..it pisses you off to be told what to do) plus SADD (basically a form of depression). I'm still trying to control my bipolar plus all of my other disorders, and it's been 8 years since I first was diagnosed. So, it takes time to control the bipolar. Be patient. Get him on meds and therapy. Hope I helped. Best of luck.

Same with my boyfriend, he also has ADHD. The best thing that I have ever done for him when he has his moments, is to just be there with him and help him through his moments. I know that it can be scary, but that is what a true love would do and that is what I do almost everyday.

My sister is bipolar. It is a disease and you have to stand by him during htis (assuming that you really love him). If he had cancer, would you leave him? You need to make sure that he takes his meds, and make sure that he goes to counseling. You should think about going to couseling with him. It takes awhile to find the right combination of meds to control the diease.

Suggest he goes to a doctor and see if he has bipolar desease. And if he is not willing to try to get help then leave before things get really bad.

If he takes his medicine properly, he will very seldom have the mood swings. People who take the medication live very normal lives.

Be supportive of him and encourage him to take his medications. There's not really much else you can do.
