The toilet tank, after a flush, emptied out. The water drained out but the toilet tank doesn't refill. No water is coming in through the refill tube. I've giggled everything and nothing happens. I don't know if something is the matter with the switch or if, perhaps, there is mineral buildup clogging the refill line so nothing comes out? Is there any way for me to determine where the problem is? Does this sound like a 'fix it yourself' problem or do I need to get professional help?

Thanks

First check the water supply to the cistern. Is there a stop cock on it which has been inadvertently turned off?

Next take the lid off the cistern. Inside you should see an arm connected to a float. This controls the flow of water into the tank and as the water level rises, it raises the float until the water is cut off. Has this float jammed at the top, perhaps? If so, push it down gently until you see water flowing in. Make sure that the float is able to move freely up and down. If it jams below water level, the water will continue to flow, of course, and you will need to lift the arm to cut off the water.

If you need more help then this drop me a e-mail
go to Home Depot and get yourself a fluid master 400A
Very easy to put in.
This will work with most toilets unless you have a low boy or something else.
Im a plumber now for 20yrs plus and you could do this yourself.
So if you need more help just ask.
The 400A is the fill valve and they do go bad or clog up due to hard water or age.
Its no big deal so dont worry bout it.
Kos
PS- In the box for the 400a there are pics a how to install VERY EASY TO DO

It depends on how handy you are with plumbing type work, and if you have appropriate tools. If you or someone in the house hasn't turned off the supply at the base of the toilet, it's probably a problem with the fill valve. A somewhat less likely possibility is the pivot for the float has rusted fast, and isn't allowing the float to drop; hopefully you could notice that. Replacing the float-valve assembly isn't especially hard, but you can make an awful mess if you don't know what you're doing. You could try stopping at one of the big home supply stores, and asking for some advice in the plumbing section. If they have someone knowledgeable, he may be able to evaluate if you can handle it yourself.

Is there a shut-off valve on the wall below the tank? If so start there. turn it off and take it loose from the tank. Point the line into a mop bucket and turn it back on. If water comes out, the problem is in the refill tube inside your tank. Any hardware store will have replacement parts just take yours with you so you can match them up. Simple to do most toilet parts are tightened with pliers or a screw-driver

This happened to me during a super cold night in winter in NY. The water won't come out because of freezing. Problem resolved itself within 12 hours when the temperatures rose.

Kos is right, go get a new Fluidmaster fill valve. They are easy to do and you won't get "Plumbed" by the price of having someone come and do it for ya.

There is a valve at the wall where the water to the toilet comes from. It may have been shut off. Just open it like you would the faucet on the outside of your house.
