This is the confusion of the human condition, realizing that the forces which make up most of ones life will always elude you. Somethings aren't meant to be understood, they never exist as a definite entity, to attempt to know them is to learn a fallacy. The horror and pain of war is made evil by the peaceful life many are allowed to live. But some in peace are wrotted away with guilt. Death is permanent and immutable, but if we weren't so self-assured in our belief that we were alive would death be so bad? Not everything must pass the test of reason, let the burdens of the world pass over reason, and just live with virtue. Hapiness and reason can co-exist. The brahman of the example needs only to accept the ebb and flow of life, seek to understand nature. His life is that of assumed superiority, not on his part but nonetheless he must renounce it. Declare himself an imbecil and throw away his pride. Then when the poor seek wisdom from the imbecil things will be clearer.

I think you need reason to have happiness. Well at least you need it to have REAL happiness. It's hard to explain. Reason and happiness can't really exist without each other. But I say reason is more important.

As children little things make us happy. Reason is something that grows with us. It makes sense that the more we refine our reasoning it should bring us happiness.

Reason...it can most certainly give happiness (and it has for me) but happiness without a cause is just ignorance.
