In my office, we seemed to have tension all the time, mainly because of different levels of paid staff. It was decided that having a gathering away from the work site every two weeks was beneficial. We also allowed flex hours; some employees staggering the times they reported to work. We eliminated absenteeism by 75% and have now have set up coffee machines in a closer location that had a window. There was even a door for the smokers. Now there is no segregation during lunch breaks.

At Christmas, everyone signs their gift cards (revealing who the secret pal has been all year) and the process is repeated. If someone leaves during the year, his or her secret pal asks who the person leaving had.
