We're paying $700 / month for rent and it seems ridiculously too much.

That would depend on the city you're living in and the side of town you're living on. This is based on what the average mortgage is compared to paying rent. If rent for a nice apartment in a nice area is say $1,000 - $1,200 and the avg mortgage payment is $1,200. Buy a home if you can. Makes no sense to throw away money and make a landlord rich. Or if you can find something for say $600 - $800, and you like the area and most of all you can afford it go for it. Make sure you can afford it either way. If you don't have much to live on after paying a certain rent amount, Then you either need to look for a cheaper place or cut down on you spending.

thats a tough question and something i have been considering quite a bit lately.
what ever you pay in rent is basically money you will never see again. and most people don't realize that whatever the area they live in and whatever the rent may be...you can spend a couple hundred more a month and be paying for a house or condo of your own. something you can get back from.
it took me a while to figure this out...and so for ten years i have been wasting my dollars away and still have nothing.
i look back and realize that i could have been paying a little more the whole time.
i will waste my money no more on rent!!!

That depends on the area. Where I am, an apt is $1,150 and the houses are like $500,000. The salaries are higher in this area.
You want to spend about 1/4 - 1/3 your bring home on rent.
