Spiders are not very smart, plain and simple. They have no notion of what a door is, they evolved in a time where there were no such things as door, and cannot learn about them either.

The doorway probably appears to be a prime hunting spot to the spiders. When they spin webs between bushes or branches, the wind and rain can knock them down, and sometimes passing animals. It's just another part of the environment. The spider doesn't recognize it as any different sort of threat.

We the human beings know which the safest place to live is.
Even then people live in places where natural calamities like Tsunami, Earth quake and volcano do often occur.
Same thing is with spiders.
Every thing is for food. We are not better than spiders.

Don't tell any crazy environmentalists. You might get a court order not to open your door anymore.

Most insects and arachnids only think one dimensionaly. Higher animals have more sophisticated brains so they'd make their nest in safer areas

Well, I'm no spider expert, but I'd wager it's because they're not too bright.
