Who makes good value luggage?

We need new luggage; ours is pretty much junk from the 80s. I don't mind spending decent money on a carry-on and/or a full set of luggage as long as it's good. On the other hand, I couldn't care less about status symbols unless the status comes from an extremely high level of quality.

I have gone through luggage as a child goes through tennis shoes. Samsonite is a great luggage, especially the hard side stuff. I have bought many different luggage sets in my 12 years of traveling and nothing has seemed to hold up well. If you have ever watched how luggage is handled while flying than you will understand. There is a hard plastic in the corners that normally brakes first and then it is all down hill from there. I am buying all hard sided Samsonite from now on.
