I will soon be renting a one bedroom flat by myself in Edinburgh. I am trying to budget according to my wage but don't know how much bills and stuff will cost. Can anyone gove me a rough figure as to how much I should expect to pay out per month on top of my rent i.e. for gas, electricity, water rates, council tax and tv licence etc? thanks very much

if you're careful you can expect to pay the following for utilites
Gas - 25 pcm
Elec - 30 pcm
Council tax - £80-£110pcm (depends on area)
Water - £15pcm (apply for low user tariff as a single occupant)
TV licence - £11pcm

then add food, cleaning materials, transport to work, clothing and any other essentials.

Plan your budget before you move, ie cooking 2 meals and freeze one, buying 2for1 where possible, putting low wattage bulbs everywhere, if you have Economy 7 elec running your washing machine overnight, putting a hippo in the toilet cystern to save water...you'll learn as you go along where you can economise. Sounds a bit heavy but the thrill of having your own place makes it all worth while. Good luck in your new home!

I would think that you need to put aside £50 a week to cover basic bills.

I live in a two bedroom flat with my 10 year old son, but this is what I pay out every month (yours won't be hugely different)

Gas/electric: £50 per month
Water: £13
Poll tax (with single person discount) : £65
TV licence: @£30 every 3 months
Phone/broadband: £25

On a weekly basis this works out at: £43 a week. Try to put something aside every week - even if it's just £10 - to cover any emergencies.

Good luck in your new home!

look up unite accomodation they supply student accommodation and keep bills to a minimum, edinburgh is expensive to live in. if you are moving there. if you are working in the city centre you can live a lot cheaper just outside edinburgh, and if your asking the price moneys a factor so i wouldn't even consider living there it pays more wages there but you pay the same prices as the tourists and to be honest edinburgh is really friendly but it has more than its share of wackosif your not sure of the area do an insurence check on how much it would cost for your car to be on the street that will help you decide.

Try to budget your self have gas electric meters put in this way you will know how much you are spending. Me and my husband lived in a council one bed flat before we bought our house, We used to use 25 quid a month in electric. theres also a bonus to it to you pay slightly more for it but you also get a nice cheque when you mite need it. gud luck hunny i hope it works out for you.

I still can't believe that people in the UK have to pay a tv license. I remember the "The Young Ones" episode in which Vivian ate the telly so the license tax man wouldn't know they were lying about the telly! LOL

I was driving my car, ran over a nail, and got a flat but I don't think anyone would want to live in there.
