I have about 4000 domain names and I have used many many registrars for them over the last 8 years.
The one I settled on over the last two years has been http://Godaddy.com
You can regulary buy .com names there for less than $8 a year and they offer free email and forwarding.

Homestead.com, 1and1.com for example.
