You mean besides enslaving a nation with the yoke of Communism and imprisoning or killing those who disagreed with him?

1- He led a revolution in the late fifties where he and a few dedicated people managed to overthrow a corrupt government installed by the US.
2- He also threw out organized crime, also a product of USA.
3- He succeeded, and has lead Cuba for over forty years.
4- The Cuban- Americans that make so much noise about how bad Cuba is are mostly those that were part of the elite class, and they want it all back.
5- Also because he's still a hero to most cubans and has overcome every attempt by the US, so far, to overthtow him.

Castro is/was a communist dictator. Instead of promoting democracy and human rights, he enslaved his own people and very likely killed/imprisoned/tortured many of his own countrymen who were against communism.
Although over the years, Castro has managed to keep a tight control over Cuban media, enough has been leaked to the world to confirm that he has been a cruel and ruthless dictator, very much feared by the Cuban people.

Castro is hated because he is a communist and communism is wrong. The ideal that started communism was not meant for it to turn put the way it is. Everyone was supposed to be equal. However it did not work out that way and many people began to lose there lives. Castro is also hated because he has murdered those who did not agree with him.

not much. He pissed off the U.S by becoming a communist country right when we were trying to contain it, smack right the middle of the Cold War. He also made a fool out of the U.S and the CIA during the whole Bay of Pigs thing. Oh yeah he had missiles that could reach the U.S and we saw them as a threat and that's about it.
