Cause they are already dead. Not much more needs to be done to them their life is already over. And it doesn't get you anywhere to finally say what you wanted to say to them when they can't hear you.
Probalbly has something to do with the whole pissing off peoples spirits and stuff too from back in the day when people were more superstitious about this kind of stuff.

Bah, all the previous answers are a lot of nonsense. People DO speak of the bad deeds of the deceased, all the time. Just in private, never in public, because that's where the taboo exists. This is true unless the person was a public figure who did a lot of wrong, like Hitler or Stalin.

I've often wondered the same thing. Also, why is it so easy for people to speak negatively to & about the living when a little positive encouragement goes a long way? We're admonished to encourage one another.

People have issues w/ me for pointing out someones positives, and for not jumping on the band-wagon. Admittedly though, some people's positives r hard 2 find.

Happy Sabbath.

Because regardless of how a person lived and what people thought about them, no one wants to have their final parting gathering to be a festival of mud slinging and the airing of dirty laundry. Therefore people believe that if they carry on the tradition of telling only of the positive aspects...even if those tellings are stretched into lies, then only good things will be spoken of them when it is their time to leave this earthly place.

Because it's disrespectful to speak ill of the dead (at least that's how I was raised). Why would you want to dwell on the negative anyway? Once someone has passed, there's nothing they can do to change their past, and wouldn't it be aweful to be remembered for the mistakes that you made in life?

If you mean at the actual funeral, then I think it's for the family's sake....People don't want to hear the bad truth about their loved ones when they are in mourning...if you mean generally speaking then I don't know....I know my mom and aunt's sometimes criticize my grandma and she passed away 18 years ago, but I guess it a case by case scenario....guess it could be out of respect

Because there's no point in crying over spilt milk. Everyone has negative stuff and that shouldn't be brought up while people who loved them are grieving. As time passes, its ok to say that something that somebody that died did bothers you. Just use tact around those that still grieve.

It comes from the old wive's tale about speaking ill of the dead. Offend them and they will come back to haunt you. We all know better, but most of us refuse to walk under ladders for the same reason. Superstition. Nothing more.
