Despite that I really enjoy most genres of music, I think my favorite would likely be Progressive. It's music that was made by and for intelligent and creative people, and has an incredible depth and complexity of musicality and emotions.
Progressive can really mean a lot of things. Yes is a Progressive band, whose range includes twenty minute epic songs on "Tales From Topographic Oceans", to poppy, folk-infused radio hits like "I've Seen All Good People", to dense, amorphous tracks like "Close to the Edge". King Crimson is a Progressive Band, who started off writing in a very avant garde Classic Rock that eventually morphed into a style similar to the Talking Heads, but with strange time signatures and rhythms. Rush is a Progressive band, but with a much more straightforward Hard Rock attitude combined with exceptional musicianship and talent enough to go off on flights of utter fancy before returning to driving bass riffs and guitar solos. Even Coheed and Cambria is a Progressive band, because they manage to integrate high-concept into a modern style and write albums that tie into each other, while harkening back to alot of Progressive and Metal sounds and ideals like the guitar against bass of Yes and the dueling guitars of classic Heavy Metal bands.
Put shortly, I appreciate the time, effort and artistry that goes into the music, as well as the amazing talent required to perform it, and the ability of the artists to capture so much in every song and really make me feel.
