It seems as though people think that semi trucks are able to stop so quickly. There are people on this site seem to think that it is so easy to drive a semi. I would like to no just how many of these people have experience behind the wheel of a semi? And What would they do if all Truck drivers went on strike? Yes I no that would not happen, but come on give these guys a break. Don't pull out in front of them because you think you can get past them so quickly, or stop quickly right in front of them. They are carrying a lot of weight AND YES they cannot stop on a dime.

Haha. The railroad couldn't handle all of the freight in the USA. I don't normally insult people, but RAIL YOU ARE A REAL NIMROD if you think that RAIL is the the way to truck. It takes BOTH industries as well as others to keep our country moving.

Okay now to the question. We can only speculate as to what we would do if Truck Drivers walked off their jobs. If you could get EVERY truck to park throughout the USA it would be a sight to see. I think the bumper sticker that says WITHOUT TRUCKS AMERICA STOPS! That sums it up pretty good.

We all need each other icemanjohnny. The trucks and the rail take or bring the stuff you haul in your barges. Yeah, I am a truck driver, but I also think trains and towboats are some of the coolest machinery around. Due to my occupation I have the highest respect for other forms of transportation and the problems inherent in the interaction of using shared common resources, be it on my speed boat or in my pickup.

I think the large difference in the amount of discussion is due to the large difference in the amount the public interacts with trucks versus commercial water vessels or trains. Most people understand railroad crossings, and of the small percentage of people who operate boats is reduced further by the number of waterways which are shared with commercial water transports.

Keeping to the original question however, people's treating of trucks on the road is not all that much different than how they treat each other. It seems that common courtesy is dead and common sense is an endagered species, in truck AND auto drivers. What was once a respected occupation has been reduced to a job damn near anyone can get. With a focus totally on the bottom line, mega trucking companies have done anything to put a warm body behind the wheel. They rush trainees through training programs barely worthy of the name. They import "drivers" from third world countries who barely speak enough English to ask for a CDL manual.

There is waaay more going on here that a simple answer can address, but let's all try a little common sense, whether we are passing a truck, a towboat, or crossing a railroad grade.

One maixm I was taught when I was getting my motorcycle license: Dead right is still dead, respect anything bigger than you.

the same thing would happen if all the tow boaters went on strike.all everybody here's about is trucks and trains.on a boat you don't have brakes or train rails.and then we get a bunch of morons on there pleasure boats playing around in front of us and it takes 2 miles just to stop a boat with 15 loaded barges.to even be qulified to run a boat you have have 8 years experince on the water, after 3 yrs. take a test for a mates license then after another yr.take a test for a steersmans license and then after 18 months take another test for the pilot license and the you can be turned loose by your self to run a boat.so i don't want to hear about the truckers or the trains and how bad they have it.

Well first of all for them to go on strike you would have to assume that they were unionized, most truckers are not unionized because scab drivers decided they would do the job cheaper and now there are even Mexican Nationals driving on our roads with very little oversite into their experience, abilities, safety records or safety of their trucks.
