I have a young child and a cat - I also have big black ants all over the porch and they are getting in the house. I don't want to put down poison so anyone know how to deter them??

Believe it or not, Windex kills ants. After killing the visible ants in the house, spray a light mist around the area that they are coming in. You just have to remember to refresh the area after shampooing or washing. It really does work.

Fantastik cleaner in a spray bottle. It worked very well for us with small ants. They don't even come back if there is a redidue of it.
If you can trace them back to their holes in your house/porch and seal the holes with silicone caulking, that will help a lot.

To stop ants seal off cracks where they are entering with putty or petroleum jelly also try sprinkling red pepper on floor and counter tops.

Haha, lady i savour your record!! i'm leaving off the sappy stuff like my daughter ,reason that is going without saying. For me then intercourse, karate, song... yet once you ensue to made it 6 i might upload yoga,wine,heels :-)
