It can be from a lot of build up.
bulid up of cystine, calcium phosphate, ammonium phosphate, magnesium phosphate, etc...
You can avoid them by finding out what was in a stone you passed or had taken out, and avoid eating the foods that have that in them.
Some people are just more prone to getting them.
They can be familial, or they can be developed by your diet.

your kidneys are basically blood filters, they clean your blood. kidney stones are calcium deposits that form a pellet(stone) ranging in size from marble size to very tiny. average size about like a BB. your diet helps cause them, also not drinking enough water because the kidneys need lots of water to flush that stuff out.

It is something smaller then a grain of salt that gets caught in the tubes coming from your kidneys going to your bladder. They are very painful to pass, if it is too large one needs to see a doctor because some of them will not pass. They are caused by a variety of things
