It depends on what digit you are rounding to. The digit to the right determines whether you should go up or down. If it is under five, then you round down. If it is five or more, then you round up. For instance: if you want to leave two digits after the decimal, then it would be 3.14 because the one after the four keeps the four a four. If you are going to leave three digits after the decimal, then it would be 3.142 because the five after the one changes the one to a two. Hope that helps!
