Or do you get immediately suspicious?

I'm just wondering what other people thought about it, because nowadays I don't trust any stranger but... I'm wondering if it's lack of trust in humankind or plain self-defence strategy

No!
I will say that the friendly stranger needs to bring more to the table besides friendliness. Let's not forget, the Muslims who attacked America were also friendly, to mask their intentions.

No one can answer this question 100%. While talking to friendly strangers you need to be extra careful.

Try to judge them by cross examining, the first acid test is to talk something bad with them & see if they are liking that part of conversation. If yes, then start exaggerating the topic & you would get a good idea of the strangers personality sketch.
Last but not least, Nature has gifted us all with a sixth sense, also called intuitive power, which come to our rescue while making crucial decisions in life. If you get a hunch that something is wrong, then SURE there is something else which is not meeting the eye, better believe it !

Of course I trust friendly strangers. I normally can tell by a person's demeanor if something is "fishy" about them, though. I think not being able to trust a friendly stranger due to your own fear is pretty crazy. We should be more open. It just goes to show you how much "fear" has crept up into America.

Know that few friendly strangers will turn out to be utterly cruel and mean later. Normally, you can gauge a person's character by your first conversations with them, depending on the circumstances, of course.

I guess I stereotype (which I hate to admit) but if it is an older man acting too friendly I might assume he's a child molestor or some kind of perv but other than middle aged men I pretty much trust strangers. Not with my life or anything, but I wouldn't be frightened around them.

I do however tell my son to never trust anyone at all. Never!

In my eyes, everyone is guilty (or suspicious) until proven innocent. Sorry, I've had too many major experiences to think otherwise.

I will be nice to a friendly stranger and give them a chance but I do it very cautiously. My mental red flags are up at all times when I converse with them. What the hell do I know about what they're up to behind closed doors!

Trusting someone depends on what you give them to be trusted with. Trust is earned not just given. If you dont give someone enough to hurt you with than they can't hurt you. Another words if you dont leave your purse around them they cant steal out of it. If you dont leave them alone at your house they cant take your belongings. If your not alone with a person they have a very low chance in being able to harm you. If you slowly let a person earn your trust by watching the results of your encounters with them then you will feel better about situation. Dont forget trust can and will always be broken in life. Usually when one breaks your trust for him or her its not your fault or because of something you've done it usually stems from their own issues---rather it be they stole from you because of their addiction--or he cheated because he said he felt unloved by you well that would be his own communication problem---see where I'm going with this? Without trust in a relationship--IT CANNOT WORK, WILL NOT WORK. When trust is gone by one or both go ahead and call it quits because you will NEVER truly get it back.

Immediately suspicious in many cases. I don't see how you can completely trust someone without good reason. It's too bad life is that way, but that's how you keep from getting burned. Be nice, but be cautious. Too much scamming going on out there.

Trust no one that's how you have to think of it nowadays....Its self-defense.... you can respect someone but not trust them or put anything past them....that's the one way you can look out for yourself because you never know what that person is thinking. Its just being safe

In today's world it is not just the strangers friendly or not that you have to be aware of. Because it may be someone that you consider a friend that stabs you in the back tomarrow.

I'm more likely to trust mean, crusty strangers than friendly ones. It's the friendly ones who can't take their smile off you that gives me the willy's
