Interesting enough, this problem has several solutions for persons who are familiar with the field of Psychology. In reality, happiness is always preferable to being down, sad, or depressed.

Two steps forward, one step back.
Now I can only think of bad things that good things come out of. Like when the WTC's got hit..that was a tragedy, but look how much more protection there is now against terrorism. It raised awareness that wasn't really there before. (Sorry if that isn't even the point, I trail off sometimes..hehe)

Yes. Since our world is round what is up to one person, maybe down to another person, standing half a world away.
Also, Up and Down are very human concepts of what is where, based on our planet. In reality, everything just is.

Is this a paradox? If so my answer would be:

Everything I say is a Lie. I am lying now
