After gym, I know that some schools require you to take a shower. I don't know what my school's policy is, but what can they do if I refuse to take one? Can my parent's send in a note? I REALLY don't want to do this but will they force me if a shower is in their requirements? Please help. Thanks.

Isn't that really dumb though? Your choice of showering affects your grade in gym? What the heck is up with these schools?

No one can force you to take a shower. However the administrators of a high school have some very powerful incentives to make you comply with the requirement if they make it one. You are subject to whatever reasonable disciplinary action they set down in a school policy and therefore you can have your physical education grade affected. In some schools it can cause you to flunk the class. Failing a P.E. class that is required for graduation could affect you ability to graduate. Your instructor can make it difficult for you in the class itself and your parents can put a lot of pressure on you if you cause your grade to go down because of the non-showering.. However no one can legally drag you into the shower and forcibly make you take a shower. If you have a valid reason for not wanting to take what is essentially a public shower and your parents and doctor or other health care providers support you in this, then you may be able to obtain a waiver of this requirement. But absent those conditions, be prepared to enter the shower or face a powerful force of incentives coming from your instructor, the school administrators and your parents. If you refuse to take the shower then do it in a polite but firm and clear manner because bad behavior in the refusal will confuse the issue and make it more difficult for you to make your point that you simply do not want to take a shower with other people.

How will they know if you take a shower or not???? That is kind of creepy. If there are curtains and you can change and shower in private it wouldn't be that bad....bring flip flops though. I don't see how they could force you. I can't beleive that they can force you to take one. You should make an appt. with the principal and speak with him if you are not having any luck speaking with your gym teacher. I don't think I would want to take one either and gym class doesn't really make you that sweaty. I would write up a list of reasons why you do not want to take a shower and present it to the principal....ie. you don't like the idea of being forced, you don't appreciate changing in front of everyone, you are afraid that there is a health risk walking on the dirty floor with your bare feet, you can't take a shower in time...etc. If that doesn't work than you can bring it up at a board of education meeting. Be prepared and have written items as to why people should have a choice of showering or not. It could also become difficult for you because a lot of gym teachers and kids in gym might ridicule you if they find out that you don't want to shower...if you know what I mean. Stick to your guns and maybe your main arguement could be that it is less sanitary to take a shower in the gym showers that it is not to take one!

Why wouldn't you want to take a shower after PE? After any kind of work out or even just being outside and sweating, a shower feels good and washes off the stink. It's also not good for your skin, especially as an adolescent, to be sweaty all day. I'd take a shower even if it wasn't required. My stepson is 15 and covered in acne, he showers as infrequently as he can - twice a week usually. In the summer, he lives with us and we make him shower every day. The difference in his face is amazing and that is because we make him shower every day and shower if he does any strenuous work outside. Nothing special, just a little soap and water.

But, if you want to find out your schools policy, go to the office and ask. If there is a medical reason, you can get a note from your doctor. Talk to your gym teacher.

I grew up in a very small town and High School was were all the activity was except for getting drunk and making out. I even did some of that at school. LOL It's hard to believe I survived High School and I was an "A" Student. School is were Girls were and were I played Football so I had a blast. It didn't hurt that by the time I started High school my Dad had quit drinking (He was one of the worst alcoholics I have ever seen) . Mom was still a pain but Dad and I became best friends, So I guess my view of my High school years is a little biased. The School Dances were big events in a small town that had one movie theater with just one screen, no fast food restaurants and no malls. We didn't get Rock Concerts coming within 150 miles so I didn't see my first Live Concert until I went away to college unless you count local bands playing at the Dances.

sounds like you are embarrassed and that is why you don't want to do it. Some schools it is a requirement and they will fail you if you don't take one. After all that sweating and stuff you will want a shower to feel refreshed. I used to be this same way, but I got over it. Everyone has a different type of body, but they all have the same parts. It's not like class mates are looking or anything. They are embarrassed about it themselves, when really it's no big deal. If you don't take a shower on the other hand, you could have alto of criticism for smelling bad, and nobody wants that.

They can not force you to. If they do, they have to provide a private place for a shower.

I am going to guess that you are just starting High School. I was there, and I was scared to death about showering with others. But you know what? Everyone is not "comfortable" with it. So you don't shower. You may be rather "rank" after gym class, but you have retained your privacy. Believe me when I tell you that the "fear" wears off. It's just a body - nothing more. It's not like anyone is parading around in the nude, and it definitely isn't like the moview show it. But see what the school says, and then deal with it there.

They can literally tell you that you smell bad. It is cruel, The high school that I did my internship did this to students. I would just take a shower and be done with it. If you have some sort of social phobia etc. then that may be addressed with the school social worker etc. good luck.

I think it depends on what skool u go to.
Our skool doesn't make u take a shower but they make u think u have to.
I think that u should be able to chose if u want to get butt-naked in a room full of ppl.
I don't want to(our gym teacher is gay) so I am just not going to.
They can't force u to do anything.

At my school we had the creepy phys ed teacher who checked to make sure you took a shower and no there weren't doors it was a room with nozzles on the wall just like in prison movies. We just went in with our towels and rinsed off real quick. All in all no ones paying any attention to any one else and no you don't want to go to classes hot and uncomfortable. Deoderant does't cover your whole body or make the sweat go away. Sorry and good luck
