The nickname is a reference to Chelsea's Russian owner, Roman Abramovich, the man responsible for you even having heard of the club. They were relatively anonymous in European football until he took over, having had only sporadic success.

It's kind of like a nickname. I had a friend named Chelsea and she was called practically every variation of that name: Chel, Chels, Chelly Bean, Chelly, etc.
