Came from YUP, Young Urban Professional, back in the early 80's. Young people fresh out from college (particularly those with business and law degrees) were being paid very well. So, they had a cool lifestyle: cars, clothes, travel, dining out, etc.

They were thought of as being very materialistic by those who were not Yuppies.

The word was invented back in the 1970's ... it's an acronym derived from "Young Urban Professional". It refers to city people with white-color jobs and lots of disposable income, who like to spend money on visible things so other people will know how successful they are.

the word stands for young urban professional, it is often used to talk about young people who live in the city and who live outrageous lifestyles, mostly because they don't have families (i.e. kids) they have disposable incomes they can blow on whatever they want like flashy cars or expensive clothes, etc.
