Celebrities change their names to gain attention or movie producers feel that their real names are to difficult or not star-like. Tom Cruise last name isn't Cruise, it's Mapother. Judy Garland's real name was Frances Gumm. Marilyn Monroe's name was Norma Jean Mortensen. Some change their names because they either chose or was told to hide their religion like Jewish-born actor Kirk Douglas, whose name is really Issur Danielovitch Demsky.

Yes they do (most of them, specially femes). Since the early years of movie making. Why? So they can sound exotic, and sophisticated, and unique.
No one whant to see a movie with "Bobby Sue" or "Bubba Smith" staring on it. One exeption to the rule is Billy Boob Thorton, but at least his last name make it go well.
Anyway, they change itm they short them, they twist them, all to look Inmortal in our eyes. (Do a search about Brad Pitt Real name, and many others...you will laugh if you search for females (check Anna Nicole Smith) and others...you will have a fun time.

No. But if you are named Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou you know you need a name people will be able to say and remember. So you change it to George Michaels.

If you are trying to hide your big name family movie folks and do things on your own ability you change your name from Nick Coppola to Nick Cage.

They don't have to but some choose to because the name may stand out better than their actual name and it sounds more show business-like.

Some of them probably didn't like their actual name and they used show business as an excuse to change it. I have heard of some celebs with really weird actual names (can't remember them offhand) so I don't blame them for changing it.

Only if their name is already registered by another actor.

For example Venessa Williams (the beauty queen and singer) had to add a middle initial 'J', because there was already a Venessa Williams registered (an actress on the soaps).

They don't. Some do because their maiden name might not sound catchy or it might not grab a lot of the public attention.
