I'm not too keen on Asian styles, so I won't say anything about those.

Europe also has a long and proud martial arts tradition. But unlike Asia, it does not have specific names for each style. Instead, European styles tend to be referred to by the name of a specific master and the weapon used, such as Saviolo's Sword and Dagger, Lichtenhauer's Longword or Talhoffer's Messer-work.

The list goes on an on. There have been more weapon masters in Europe from the Middle-ages on than you can shake a sword at, but depending on the weapon you are interested in, there is a lot of research that can be done. The books are available in reprints and there is a healthy and growing Western Martial Arts community out there.

There are many martial arts that use swords. Tai Chi, Aikido, Jodo all use swords as training tools, but martial arts that focus on swords are fewer in number:

Kendo: Japanese fencing this is a modernized sport version of fencing that may have lost much of its martial flavor depending on what school and instructors you have. Practitioners wear light armor and practice with rattan swords called shinai.

Kenjutsu: Japanese fencing usually with focus on the martial aspect. Most schools use wooden swords (boken or bokuto) during training.

Iaido or Iaijutsu: The art of drawing the Japanese sword. Focus is on quick attack and defense techniques that begin and end with the sword in the scabbard (saya). Practitioners typically use aluminum alloy swords or real swords to practice.

There are many different schools of each type and it's even possible to find traditional koryu schools teaching in America. You'll need to see what's available in your area.

For western sword arts there is always fencing, which is the modern sport based on traditional sword arts. There are also historical fencing offshoots that take fencing back to its roots. You can also find groups trying to rediscover western martial arts teaching longsword, rapier and other weapons. Try looking for groups like Schola St. George or ARMA. Go take a look out on swordforum.com to see what else is available.

Kendo is the martial art, and if I rememeber correctly the practice sword is called a 'Bo' which is made out of wood.

The art of the Ninja (using swords included) is Ninjutsu (sometimes called Ninjitsu). It is very training intensive and not as common as Kendo, thats why I mentioned Kendo 1st.

Eskrima is another form of martial art from Brazil which makes use of 2 short daggers in very close combat. Excellent close range combat techniques and very little phsical training required.

As stated above there is no set name for a european style like this, you'll just have to try search for something.

For asian styles there is one called Shinkendo. Kendo is a set of sword fighting techniques, generally plain Kendo is fencing while Shinkendo is for the katana.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
