Basically, I just bought a DVD recorder for my TV set. It's a lesser expensive Panasonic. I like to watch and record TV shows. I only watch them once. Then I like to re-record over them like you do with a VHS tape.
I know I can do this with a DVD-RW, but my question is: Once I finalize this disc to play on a different DVD player, can I erase it again? Or once it's finalized, it becomes a "read only" DVD even though its a DVD-RW.

After having mixed results in the answers, I went out to figure it out myself.
You CAN reformat a DVD-RW even AFTER you finalize. So the answer is yes, you can re-record a DVD-RW after finalizing. All you have to do is reformat. Of couse the entire disc will be erased.
