To my personal belief that mankind single highest achievement in the 20th century is the cure for polio.

I think changing the spelling of the word "achievement" was probably mankind's highest calling, almost Godlike in it's simplicity, it's time-saving ability, and it's universal acceptance as, and I quote here from Stephen Hawking, "an ***-kicking idea." With one stroke, hope was restored to an otherwise apathetic world.

The discovery of the electron. Well, OK, it falls a few years short of the 20th century, but it's really what has made later technological advances possible.

In engineering terms I would say Concorde, and not just because I am British. Even Nasa scientists have been known to admit that sustained supersonic passenger flight was a much greater feat than putting a man on the moon.

In terms of science in general, I would say quantum theory.

In social terms, I would say the reconstruction of Europe after the second world war, which was largely thanks to the USA.
