Why does it seem that more people in America are more depressed, mentally ill, or on medication than any other country. I have friends from different countries and they have made this comment before, but I never payed attention until recently and now I see where they are coming from.

WOW!!! It is kind of creepy!

I think in the U.S. its more socially acceptable to be 'screwed up' and therefore, to talk about it very openly. Its also an economic thing. A lot of the pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. have a very, very wide marketing base, and a marketing technique is using the experiences of 'real people' to see the effectiveness of their product.

As others have mentioned, we Americans also happen to take a LOT for granted and try to find happiness in material wealth, which is a false happiness in the end.

Actually, the U.S. is one of the happiest countries in the world, according to a recent scientific poll. Perhaps people here are more willing to speak openly and honestly about mental illness here than other places where mental illness is taboo.

Do you find mental illness creepy?

Because the need to "Keep up with the Jone's" is overwhelming the people of America. So, we work too hard for very little pay, we buy things we don't really need just because our neighbor got it, we go on vacations that only make us more tired than when we left, and we are so "connected" that we can't get away from anyone.....ever. All in all....it's stress. Pure and simple. We have dug ourselves into this grand hole and I don't see us getting out of it any time soon.

Nah that's not true. Scandinavia and alot of the northern European countries have lots of depression and related problems. Maybe its just the peoples from that area have more of a tendency towards mental conditions. Since many immigrated from there to here as well.

In most Country's it is considered acceptable to . live according to a certain Culture. in the USA our Cultural Melting Pot has a certain amount of stress in it . trying to survive all the Cultural differences. I think , for this reason one must decide who they are and be happy with what they decide . we are all different and all want the same thing. Peace , Love, & Freedom when those things go missing ,depression sets in. Kritikos43 Phylosophy

Because we take normal everyday things for granted. We take ourselves too seriously and we think we are the best, but at the same time, we think that life sucks. All those people should go what I have gone through. Then they can cry.
