I couldn't agree more with Amy.

Teachers should be teaching their students... not loving them.

I'm an assistant principal and former teacher. Most teachers really care about there students, and I have a few favorite kids from over the years that I have kept in contact with as they have gone through high school and college. However, I never went places with them or had what could be considered a friend relationship. I was always a teacher to them. Anything less would have been unprofessional.

I'm like tsopolly. I'm a teacher now and I have kids that I keep in touch with through e-mail and who will occasionally IM me. I care very deeply about my students, but mostly about their education. There are kids I know who have a rough home life and I tend to go the extra mile for them. Like I had one student who had very little money and he had a binder that was a couple of years old and really in very poor shape.. so one of his other teachers and I bought him a new binder/folders/etc. But we made sure that he was the only one who knew as to not make the other kids feel slighted. I care about them in this way, but don't think I'd have a friendship outside of work with them. More with some of their parents though. But I'm also 30 and teach kindergarten and do the afterschool K-5 program. So my kids are all younger and not high school age.

Most students think of their students as their own children, but as for having a relationship with them outside of school. That can be a problem with all of the rules that are out there today.

I'm sure some would like to, but it's just too dangerous these days. They'll have a cop on their door even if it really is just an innocent friendship.
