Why do some high rise buildings have wind socks on them?

Who is bennefitting from them being there?
commuters on teh freeway? air planes? window washers/
weather people?

It lets airplanes and helicopters know which way the wind is blowing and how hard.

So in case they want to take off, they know which way to turn into the wind ;-)
